Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Las Vegas Hotel "Trash Chute Fire" Caused By Sparks From Workers Grinding Metal; $100,000 In Damage

“…Sprinklers inside the chute activated to control the fire, but firefighters found smoldering material in or around the trash chutes from the second to the ninth floors…sparks produced by workers grinding metal with an industrial tool around the trash chute caused the fire…”

Clark County Firefighters were called Thursday morning to the Strip to extinguish a fire in a trash chute at the Planet Hollywood, which caused an estimated $100,000 in damage.

Firefighters responded to reports of smoke at 10:12 a.m. and discovered the fire, which was quickly contained, in a fifth-floor chute in the north hotel tower, according to Clark County spokesman Dan Kulin.

Heavy smoke was reported on several floors, and the fifth, sixth and seventh floors were evacuated, Kulin said.

Hospitality Industry Legal Risks: Illinois Restaurant Sued For "Negligence" After Repairman "Set On Fire" By Employee; Seeks $50,000 In Damages

“…a recently filed lawsuit argues the East China Inn was negligent, and seeks more than $50,000 in damages…the man was standing on top of the stove inspecting a sprinkler system and changing a fuse…he needed medical treatment for a year…”

A fire suppression repairman has sued the East China Inn restaurant on Randall Road in Batavia, arguing he was set on fire while working during an October 2010 visit. Matthew Rapp, 25, of Oak Forest sustained severe burns to his left leg after someone turned on a wok while Rapp was atop a stove fixing fuses, his attorney said.

“He got burned quite badly,” said attorney Matt Willens, adding Rapp was burned mostly on his left leg from his ankle to his knee. “Because of the burn, he missed 21 weeks of work. He was burned by grease.”

The suit states that Rapp visited the Chinese restaurant on Oct. 12, 2010, for his job with Fire Science Techniques. “A restaurant employee turned on the stove or continued to work on the stove that the plaintiff was working above which set the plaintiff on fire,” the lawsuit states.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: West Virginia Hotel Fire Destroys 30 Rooms, Killing One Man

“…Witnesses told authorities the fire appeared to start in the top section of the motel’s west wing, but no cause has been determined… The fire destroyed about 30 rooms…”

The West Virginia Fire Marshal’s Office says a Louisiana man has died of burns he suffered during a weekend hotel fire. Media outlets identified the victim as 21-year-old Dustin McCellen.

The marshal’s office didn’t provide his hometown, and the chief investigator on the Wilsonburg blaze didn’t immediately respond to a message Tuesday.

McCellen was an oil and gas industry worker who was staying at the Towne House West Motor Lodge when it caught fire early Sunday morning.

No one else was injured. Many of the rooms were rented by other gas workers who had gone home for the weekend.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Hawaii Hotel And Resort Fire Starts On Second Floor Of Older Building With "Shake Roof" That Burns Quickly And Collapses; $1.4 Million In Damages

“….the structure was old, making it more difficult to fully extinguish the fire…the roof material is wooden shake which made it burn faster…the fire caused about $1.4 million in damage…”

Maui firefighters spent their labor day battling a blaze at the Valley Isle Resort in Kahana. The fire was called in just after 6 a.m. Monday. Maui firefighters say it started on the second floor of a two-story building. Thick smoke and flames poured out from the roof which partially collapsed as more than 60 firefighters battled the flames.

Mainaga says a defensive tactic was necessary because the whole roof could come down, so firefighters had to stay outside. Firefighters evacuated the building as well as the Valley Isle Resort, a hotel and condominium building right next door.

The two-story building is part of the resort and has offices as well as a fitness center. “Yes that explains why the thing burned so fast.” said Mainaga.

Mainaga says no one was in the unit where the fire started and everyone was evacuated in time, so nobody was hurt.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: California Hotel And Restaurant Fire Caused By Electrical Malfunction; Over $400,000 In Roof And Water Damage

“…The blaze damaged the inn’s roof and attic, and there was water damage to the upper floors…damage is estimated at between $400,000 and $500,000…”

An electrical malfunction in a bathroom might have caused a fire at the Calistoga Inn Tuesday morning, a Calistoga firefighter said. The fire was reported at 3:13 a.m. at the inn, restaurant and brewery located at 1250 Lincoln Ave.

Guests were evacuated as crews began to battle the flames.  Twelve of the hotel’s 18 rooms were occupied, mostly by couples, Tamagni said. No injuries were reported.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Washington Restaurant Fire Caused By "Combustible Items Near Water Heater"; Over $1,000,000 In Damage

 “…the fire was most likely caused by combustible items being stored too close to the water heater…resulting in over $1,000,000 in damage…”

Investigators believe a fire at a Lynnwood restaurant this week started near a water heater, officials said Friday.
The fire broke out about 2 p.m. Wednesday at The Local Yolk at 4025 196th Street SW.

Diners and staffers got out safely, but the fire caused up to $1 million in damage, according to the Lynnwood Fire Department.

Investigators were unable to pinpoint what exactly started the fire. Most likely, it was caused by combustible items being stored too close to the water heater.

Hospitality Industry Safety Risks: Multistory Hotels Face Increased Fire Risk From "Elevator Lift Shafts" That Provide "Ready Pathway For Toxic Smoke And Fire" To Travel Upwards

“…lift shafts provide a ready pathway for smoke and fire to travel upwards in multi-storey buildings.  Buoyant fire gases in a lift shaft can quickly fill upper floors, and there is much evidence to suggest that the majority of fatalities in such fires occur on higher floors significantly removed from the seat of the fire…”

Fires involving lift shafts pose particular risk in hotels where there can be large numbers of people, some of whom may be elderly or infirm, and in an unfamiliar place.  In 2007 alone, it’s estimated that one in 12 hotels and motels in the USA suffered a structural fire. 

That was certainly true in 1980 MGM Grand Hotel fire in Las Vegas which claimed 84 lives, the worst disaster in Nevada history.  In that incident, while the fire primarily only damaged the second floor, most of the deaths occurred on the upper floors, with elevator shafts and stairwells allowing toxic smoke to spread upwards.

It’s hard to overestimate the impact this fire had on both our understanding of vertical fire movement and on the building regulations to mitigate against fire risk.  The fire in a garment factory in a tall building claimed 146 lives, and directly led to new laws on building access and egress, fire proofing requirements, the availability of fire extinguishers, the installation of alarm systems and automatic sprinklers.

Under current fire safety legislation it is the responsibility of the person(s) having responsibility for the building to provide a fire safety risk assessment that includes an emergency evacuation plan for all people likely to be in the premises, including disabled people, and how that plan will be implemented. Such an evacuation plan should not rely upon the intervention of the Fire and Rescue Service to make it work.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Missouri Hotel Roof Fire Results In "Severe Smoke Damage"; Costs Estimated At $20,000

“…(there was a) significant amount of smoke throughout the building…and damage in the lobby…estimated preliminary damage costs to be $20,000, according to the news release…”

A roof fire caused severe smoke damage at the Quality Inn in north Columbia on Tuesday afternoon. Kasey Ryan, a general manager and director of sales at the Quality Inn, said she thought the fire started between noon and 1 p.m.

“We noticed smoke in the lobby,” Ryan said. Guests lingering after a lunch meeting in the motel were asked to evacuate. Columbia Fire Department personnel arrived at the scene shortly after. Firefighters requested a second alarm roughly 20 minutes after their initial arrival, according to a news release. A dozen firefighters, five fire trucks, one ambulance and four police vehicles were present about 2:30 p.m.

Everyone safely evacuated and no injuries were reported.  “We’re just going to go through the process of cleaning up,” Ryan said. Ryan said she hopes the motel will be open in 24 hours, but a reopening date has not been set.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Delaware Restaurant Fire Caused By Electrical Failure; Unoccupied Building Suffers Significant Damage

The Delaware fire marshal’s office says an early morning blaze that damaged a New Castle restaurant was accidental. The fire was reported shortly after 5 a.m. Sunday at the Casablanca restaurant on North DuPont Highway near Minquadale.

No injuries were reported in connection with the fire, which occurred while the building was closed and unoccupied. The fire caused an estimated $100,000 in damages.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Michigan Restaurant "Grease Fire" Spreads Through Vent To Roof, Damaging Building And Other Businesses

“…a vent behind the restaurant was fully engulfed in fire…It went from smelling smoke to the roof being engulfed in flames…”  

A grease fire that started in Hunan House Chinese restaurant destroyed the building and several others in the same strip mall Monday afternoon. There was heavy smoke and visible flames when fire crews arrived on the scene. The roof on Hunan House collapsed shortly after.  Firefighters spent several hours battling the blaze, which also spread to other businesses including Central Barbershop and MetroPCS.

The Central Barbershop owner, Jon Dancer, told The Morning Sun that he was in mid-haircut when his business started smelling like smoke. Ali L. Bazzi said he closed the cellphone store quickly and went outside, where he watched the fire “spread like crazy.”
