Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Ohio Restaurant Fire Starts In “Kitchen Fryer” And Heavily Damages Structure; “Advanced Fire In Building’s Center” Limits Firefighters To Defensive Action

A fire Friday afternoon that heavily damaged a popular Irish pub and restaurant, as well as a catering business, started in a kitchen fryer. That’s the preliminary assessment from Springfield Fire Rescue Division Chief Nick Heimlich, who kept firefighters on the scene at McMurray’s Irish Pub, Paddy’s Backdoor Pizza and Carmae Catering, all housed at 122 E. College Ave., on Friday night.

Heimlich said firefighters found “an advanced fire” in the center of the structure and noted that the progression of the fire was very rapid. Because the three businesses are connected and under one roof “a problem in one pretty quickly becomes a problem in the others,” the chief said.

When the decision was made to pull back and take a defensive posture in battling the flames because crews weren’t making the kind of progress they wanted in putting out the fire, Heimlich said, “basically that means for the most part the structure is a loss.”

Hospitality Industry Health Risks: CDC Reports That Up To “58% Of Hotel And Public Swimming Pools Contain Fecal Matter”, Resulting In Increased “E.Coli & Other Recreational Water Illnesses”

In 2013, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a report that found fecal matter in 58% of public swimming pools. The study looked at 161 samples from pool filter concentrates…The study detected E. coli in over 50% of the pool samples, indicating that swimmers frequently introduced fecal material into pools. This could mean that pathogens can be transmitted to others through the use of these pools and recreational water activities…Although the study found E. coli at higher rates in municipal pools, pools that required a membership or were located within a club still tested positive 49% of the time.

Since 1978, the incidence of recreational water illness (RWI) outbreaks of acute gastrointestinal illness has substantially increased.

Some of the organisms detected in the study included:
• Pseudomonas aeruginosa
• E. coli
• Giardia intestinalis
• Cryptosporidium

Contrary to popular belief, chlorine does not kill all germs instantly. There are germs today that are very tolerant to chlorine and were not known to cause human disease until recently. Once these germs get in the pool, it can take anywhere from minutes to days for chlorine to kill them.

Recreational water illnesses are caused by germs spread by swallowing, breathing in mists or aerosols of, or having contact with contaminated water in swimming pools, hot tubs, water parks, water play areas, interactive fountains, lakes, rivers, or oceans. Recreational water illnesses can also be caused by chemicals in the water or chemicals that evaporate from the water and cause indoor air quality problems.

Hospitality Industry Safety Risks: Alabama Hotel Guests Hospitalized By “Excessive Pool Chlorine Exposure”; Employee Failed To Turn Pump On

Hotel Pool Chlorine Health Issues“…employees of the hotel were putting chlorine in the pool without the pump on.  When the pump was turned back on, chlorine came out too fast instead of gradually…”

Nine people were sickened Sunday after coming into contact with too much chlorine at the Renaissance Birmingham Ross Bridge Golf Resort & Spa in Hoover.

Hoover Fire and Rescue were called out Sunday afternoon to the hotel pool where nine people had become ill.

Five people were treated on the scene. Two adults and two children were transported to local hospitals.
The pool was closed down for a short time but has since been reopened.

Hospitality Industry Safety Risks: Hawaii Hotel Fined $48,000 By OSHA For 14 “Workplace Safety And Health Violations”; Lack Of Employee Training

According to the OSHA release, the serious violations at Kauai Beach Resort involved storage, handling and labeling of propane tanks, electrical wiring, electrical work practices by untrained maintenance personnel, and training and use of personal respiratory and Hospitality Industry OSHA Safety And Health It's The Lawelectrical protective equipment.

A popular Kauai hotel received 14 workplace safety and health standards violations on Thursday, and nine of them were serious enough for the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration to take action. Kauai Beach Resort in Lihue faces a total of $48,000 in proposed fines. Kai Management Services of Lihue, the management company for Kauai Beach Resort, received the violations following a routine inspection conducted on Feb. 14 by the OSHA Honolulu Area Office.

  • Workers mixing chlorine for swimming pools do not present a hazard to swimmers. Failing to follow proper safety precautions puts the workers health in jeopardy and it is the responsibility of the employer to train them, he said.
  • The maid service handles chemicals and it is the responsibility of management to ensure they are trained and using safety equipment, he said.
  • Untrained workers altering the wiring of an electrical panel in performing day-to-day maintenance is a serious violation. Management must ensure that only qualified personnel work on energized circuits, he said.
  • Another violation included the incorrect use of flexible cords as substitutes for fixed wiring. In some instances this occurs from daisy-chaining several electrical strips in an industrial kitchen, where an overload from high amperage appliances could cause melting and a fire hazard, Lemke said.

Hospitality Industry Crime Solutions: Alaska Restaurant Uses “Facebook Posting” To Track Down Thieves Who Broke Into Company Freezer

“…In Facebook postings that began Saturday morning, the owner of Kriner’s Diner said they had surveillance camera footage of a car and at Restaurant Social Media Helps Find Thievesleast two suspects who, the diner’s owner alleges, broke into the company freezer just before 5 a.m. Saturday…Once the pictures hit the web, they spread rapidly online. The operator of the diner’s page said just one picture was shared nearly 48,000 times within 24 hours of being posted…”

The owners of a Midtown restaurant are crediting social media with helping nab the suspects who stole meat from the company freezer. The payoff came Sunday, just after noon, when Kriner’s Diner updated its Facebook page, writing that “Facebook friends” had spotted the car in question and called the police, resulting in an arrest.

It’s a call the restaurant’s owner said wouldn’t have happened without the postings on social media.

“I had mentioned what had happened on my page, and you know, tips just started pouring in and people wanted to help,” Andy Kriner said Monday. “I posted it on our Kriner’s Facebook page and within 30 hours, they were in custody.”

Kriner said he uses the social network often, posting specials and other information about his restaurant, but never before had he used it like this.

“An average post of mine has 1,500 views, and I have a lot of people go on there day to day just to look at our lunch specials,” he said. “I think that this probably had a lot to do with it.”

Kriner said he couldn’t comment on the details of the still-active investigation—he declined to disclose just how much meat or what other products were stolen, nor how many suspects had been arrested—but he said the postings on Facebook played a vital role making the arrest.

Hospitality Industry Legal Risks: Texas-Based Motel Group Faces “Class-Action Lawsuit” Over “ADA Pool Lift” Non-Compliance; “No Plan Or Policy Making Pools Accessible By Disabled People”

“…the defendant’s hotels, which are places of public accommodation, have barriers to use of the pools…the pools do not have a fixed pool lift or Hospitality Industry Class Action Lawsuitsother acceptable means of entry for disabled persons, notwithstanding that such modifications are readily achievable…the existence of barriers to use the pool at the defendant’s hotels deterred the plaintiff from staying at the defendant’s hotels, the suit says.”

G6 Hospitality Property LLC is facing a class action lawsuit alleging it is not complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The litigation, initiated May 20 in the Houston Division of the Southern District of Texas by plaintiff Dana Bowman, claims G6, doing business as Motel 6, failed “to design, construct and/or own or operate hotel facilities that are fully accessible to, and independently usable by, disabled people.”

Bowman, a retired Army sergeant first class, asserts that he called the respondent prior to visiting Houston on business to see if its hotels’ pools had some means of access for the disabled such as himself only to be told there were none, adding he “independently” verified the absence of a pool lift at the facilities.

According to the original petition, the respondent “does not have a plan or policy that is reasonably calculated to make all of its hotels fully accessible to and independently usable by disabled people.”

A jury trial is requested.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Ohio Restaurant Fire Caused By “Outside Propane Smoker Being Too Close To Wall”; Building A “Complete Loss” Estimated At $300,000

“…the fire chief (stated that) a restaurant cook was outside smoking prime rib when a propane fire got too close to the building…The building was Restaurant Firebuilt to code (but) it’s just the nature of the beast…they had a lot of fire moving fast, and it was hard to get to because it was under the roof, and the roof keeps water out like it is supposed to…firefighters said the building is a complete loss, about $300,000…”

A fire in North Ridgeville destroyed a local restaurant Saturday. It happened around 3 p.m. at the Black Dog Pub and Eatery on Sugar Ridge Road. Because of the disaster, the building couldn’t be saved. Crews had to demolish it. Crews with the North Ridgeville Fire Department said it was an accidental fire.

The owner of the restaurant, who didn’t want to be identified, was heartbroken as she looked on while several different agencies sprayed down the building.

“She just put a lot of money into the floors. She just remodeled the place you know. She was doing really good on business. Everything was going great,” said Xevier Neider, who was a chef at Black Dog. “It’s sad that she did a lot here, for it to just go up like that.”

Hospitality Industry Risk Solutions: Hotel Housekeeping Carts Are Now Smaller Leading To Increased Room Security, Less Employee Injuries And Reduction In Amenity And Towel Theft

 “Items are not exposed to people walking through hallways so theft of amenity items or towels is greatly reduced…there’s a safety issue, too…Housekeeping staff would park the larger carts outside and keep the door open while they cleaned…not so with the Hotel Housekeeping Safety & Securitysmaller version…the guest comes back and sees the door wide open (and would) think anyone can get in the room…”

“Linen closets (are now) situated closer to the rooms for easy access, eliminating the need for the larger carts. The housekeeping staff has been more productive with the smaller carts because they can move around more quickly, he says. They’re also less prone to injury as the larger carts were heavy to push around…”

Big, rolling housekeeping carts are disappearing from many hotel hallways, just like the floral polyester linens they used to carry. Hotels say they’re replacing cumbersome carts with smaller ones sometimes akin to golf caddie bags out? of necessity, in addition to convenience and even appearance.

Among those saying goodbye to the hall-blocking carts: The Staybridge Suites Times Square in New York, The Ritz-Carlton in Charlotte and the Renaissance Charlotte SouthPark Hotel.

Hotel general managers say there are a number of reasons why smaller is better.

  • Hotels don’t use duvets and bulky linens anymore, so there’s no need for large carts, they say. Plus, storage space is at a premium, and smaller carts don’t take up much space.
  • The bags are small enough to take into the room and leave the hallways clear and safe. They also don’t nick the walls of elevators and corridors like the large carts did.
  • But more important, the guests prefer them, says Rich Hotter, general manager of the Staybridge Suites Times Square.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Texas Hotel Undergoing Renovations Suffers Fire Damage As “Hot Temperatures, Matresses Fuel Blaze”

Hotel Fire Investigation“…workers said they think mattresses might have fueled the blaze, but Dallas  Fire officials said they do not have an official cause of the fire…the fire was escalated to three alarms due to the size of the building and the hot and humid temperature inside…the renovated building was set to open as a new hotel in August 2013…”

A building being renovated into a new Homewood Suites was damaged after a  three alarm fire midday Wednesday. Officials with the hotel chain told FOX4 workers were installing dry wall and  flooring when the fire broke out on the fifth floor of the nine story building  shortly before noon.

Construction workers were in the building at the time and were evacuated. The  fire was put out by 12:30 p.m.

Fire officials said they believe the fire was accidental.

Management for the hotel told FOX4 they believe they will be able to make  repairs and still open on schedule.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Michigan Restaurant Electrical Fire Caused By “Kitchen Materials Improperly Stored”; Heat Causes Pipes To Burst And Extensive Water Damage

“…the cause was improper storage of materials from the kitchen in an area not intended for storage…the heat caused pipes to burst, so there is Restaurant Firewater and smoke damage to the entire building…Normally the cleanup contractors can get things cleaned up if they can get in there right away, but the major issue will be damage to the electrical system…”

An early morning electrical fire has closed Culver’s restaurant on 9th street for at least a few weeks, general manager Jennie Atteberry said Tuesday morning. Texas Township fire chief Mike Corfman said his department was dispatched at 4:32 a.m. Tuesday when a delivery man noticed a haze at the  restaurant and  called 911.

When firefighters arrived they found heavy smoke coming from the utility room, he said.

It took only 10 minutes to put out the fire, which was contained to the utility room. There were no injuries in the fire.
