Hospitality Industry Security Risks: Louisiana Hotels' Guest Rooms Burglarized By Thieves Who "Checked For Unlocked Doors"; Suspects Walked Out With Laptops And Electronics

“…(suspects were) walking in the hotel, walking out with the victim’s property…laptops, electronics, iPods, and iPads…cell phones, bags of clothing, jewelry…in some cases thieves got into rooms by checking for unlocked doors…”

After arresting two suspects in a string of downtown hotel burglaries, New Orleans Police confiscated loads of property. Police say rooms at several hotels in the downtown area were burglarized in early July. It was later determined to be the work of the same set of crooks.

“I noticed my door in my room even if I just walk out it doesn’t close,” one hotel guest said. Carroll says an anonymous tip from the public led detectives to arrest this modern day Bonnie and Clyde.

A search warrant executed at her home turned up loads of evidence.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Michigan Restaurant "Grease Fire" Spreads Through Vent To Roof, Damaging Building And Other Businesses

“…a vent behind the restaurant was fully engulfed in fire…It went from smelling smoke to the roof being engulfed in flames…”  

A grease fire that started in Hunan House Chinese restaurant destroyed the building and several others in the same strip mall Monday afternoon. There was heavy smoke and visible flames when fire crews arrived on the scene. The roof on Hunan House collapsed shortly after.  Firefighters spent several hours battling the blaze, which also spread to other businesses including Central Barbershop and MetroPCS.

The Central Barbershop owner, Jon Dancer, told The Morning Sun that he was in mid-haircut when his business started smelling like smoke. Ali L. Bazzi said he closed the cellphone store quickly and went outside, where he watched the fire “spread like crazy.”

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Las Vegas Hotel "Swamp Cooler" Fire Injures 14 People As Smoke On Upper Floors Forces Evacuation

“…an accidental malfunction in the swamp cooler, a device that cools air through the evaporation of water, caused the fire…The unit caught fire and sent smoke into the hotel, prompting the evacuation of some of the upper floors of the building…”

A malfunctioning swamp cooler is being blamed for a roof fire at Las Vegas’ Treasure Island Hotel that left 14 people with minor injuries, officials said.

The fire broke out atop the hotel Tuesday morning, the Las Vegas Sun reported. The fire was put out by 9:36 a.m. Emergency responders checked out 14 people for smoke inhalation and treated them at the scene, officials said. The fire caused an estimated $20,000 worth of damage to the hotel, said Clark County Fire Chief Bertral Washington.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Boston Hotel Parking Garage Fire Caused By Contractor's Welding Torch; Additional Safety Concerns Discovered

“… an independent contractor was in the basement of the parking garage building a new restaurant when a welding torch malfunctioned, causing the small fire…”

“…Boston fire say they discovered that some of the exhaust fans were not working and gave the hotel until the end of the day to fix them or risk being shut down. Fire officials also said it appeared a standpipe was leaking and it had to be fixed…”

A major Boston hotel has addressed some safety concerns after they were discovered while crews battled a small parking garage fire on Monday. The fire broke out in Level 1 of the Westin Hotel garage just after 10 a.m. Monday, according to Boston fire. The fire started on a control knob of a 3-foot high acetylene tank, and fire crews doused the tank to keep it cool, according to Boston fire.

Boston fire’s Steve MacDonald said the contractor had the proper permits for the torches, but they will be amended to include a fire watch any time welding is taking place at the site.

Jorgensen said the exhaust fans have been fixed. Water that was believed to be leaking from a standpipe was actually from the fire department’s hoses, Jorgensen said.

Hospitality Industry Legal Risks: Chicago Hotel And Restaurant Sued For $500,000 In Wrongful Death Lawsuit

“…The 10-count lawsuit, which seeks more than $500,000 in compensation for Duskey’s wrongful death, names Hilton Worldwide, the Palmer House Hilton, Surreal Chicago and Adrenaline Y2K as the party hosts…Megan Duskey fell four floors to her death after she tried to slide down a railing at the Palmer House Hilton…”

The parents of a former Crete woman who fell to her death at a “Haunted Hotel Ball” at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago in 2010 are suing the hotel and the event hosts. James and Deborah Duskey claim in a lawsuit filed Tuesday in Cook County Circuit Court that the death of their daughter Megan at the Halloween-themed ball was due to the negligence of the hotel and the event companies who hosted the party.

The lawsuit claims the hotel and event hosts allowed people at the ball to “consume unlimited amounts of alcoholic beverages” after they paid for a ticket and failed to provide security to protect the patrons of the ball.

Hospitality Industry Safety Risks: Illinois Hotel Sued For Negligence By Man In "Slip And Fall" Accident; Claims Permanent Injuries

“…(hotel  is accused) of negligence for allegedly failing to keep the hotel lobby floor clean and dry. He says he has suffered — and will continue to suffer — physical and mental pain and anguish. Cattani is asking for an undetermined amount of money for medical expenses and lost income in addition to court costs…”

A Collinsville man claims the “carelessness” of owners and managers of a local hotel led him to slip and fall in the lobby. Bobby Cattani filed a lawsuit July 10 in Madison County Circuit Court against Lodging Hospitality Management, doing business as Doubletree Hotel. Hotel owner, Colhot LLC, is also named as a defendant.

Just after 11 p.m. on Aug. 2, 2010, Cattani says he slipped and fell on a “liquid substance that had accumulated on the floor” of the Doubletree Hotel on Eastport Plaza Drive. He says he severely and permanently injured numerous parts of his body along with his nervous system.

Hospitality Industry Security Risks: Electronic Hotel Room Locks Shown To Be Vulnerable To "Hardware Gadgets"

The system’s vulnerability arises, Brocious says, from the fact that every lock’s memory is entirely exposed to whatever device attempts to read it through that port. Though each lock has a cryptographic key that’s required to trigger its “open” mechanism, that string of data is also stored in the lock’s memory, like a spare key hidden under the welcome mat.

At the Black Hat security conference Tuesday evening, a Mozilla software developer and 24-year old security researcher named Cody Brocious plans to present a pair of vulnerabilities he’s discovered in hotel room locks from the manufacturer Onity, whose devices are installed on the doors of between four and five million hotel rooms around the world according to the company’s figures. Using an open-source hardware gadget Brocious built for less than $50, he can insert a plug into that DC port and sometimes, albeit unreliably, open the lock in a matter of seconds. “I plug it in, power it up, and the lock opens,” he says simply.

The ability to access the devices’ memory is just one of the two vulnerabilities Brocious says he found in Onity’s locks. He says the company also uses a weak encryption scheme that allows him to derive the “site code”–a unique numerical key for every facility–from two cards encoded one after another for the same room. By reading the encrypted data off of two cards and testing thousands of potential site codes against both cards until the decoded data displays a predictable interval between the two, he can find the site code and use it to create more card keys with a magnetizing device. But given that he can only create more cards for the same room as the two keys he’s been issued, that security flaw represents a fairly low risk compared with the ability to open any door arbitrarily.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Kentucky Hotel's Roof Partially Torn Off By High Winds; Water Damage To Top Three Floors From Sprinkler System

“…the National Weather Service was calling for 60-mile-per-hour winds. The top three floors of the hotel had water damage from the sprinkler system and officials say those guests were relocated…”

A Louisville hotel suffered damage in Thursday’s storm. Heavy winds whipped through the airport at an estimated 44-mile-per-hour winds. At one point, part of the roof on the Crowne Plaza Hotel was blown off.

At least 200 rooms were impacted. Several cars in the parking lot were also damaged.

The Crown Plaza was hosting the National Junior Angus Show and was at 100 percent occupancy.

“We’ve also heard the sprinkler system went off in there and that other things could be ruined other than the top floors, so we were anxious to see, but we were very amazed to see all the debris. Amazed. And that’s typically where we park,” says Donna Guice, a hotel guest from Louisiana.

Hospitality Industry Health Risks: Oregon Restaurants Will Not Be Required To Prohibit "Bare-Hand Contact" Pending Review; "Double Hand-Washing Rule" To Be Enforced

“…(the State of Oregon) decided to remove the bare-hand contact prohibition from the proposed rules because this issue needs further discussion…the group will convene multiple times over the next few months. The state will continue to enforce its double hand-washing rule for food servers until any changes are announced…”

The Oregon Health Authority is shelving its proposed rule mandating that restaurant workers not prepare food with their bare hands. State health officials have decided to convene a work-group on standards to prevent food-borne illness. The group will work toward a substitute to the so-called “no bare hand contact” rule originally proposed by the Health Authority.

That provision was to take effect on July 1, but was delayed after protests from the food service industry. The work group will include restaurateurs, legislators, medical professionals and others.

Gail Shibley, the administrator of the OHA’s Public Health Division, said her agency is looking for diverse opinions. “We think we can get the wisdom from restaurateurs as well as a variety of other folks to really dig into the details of this specific provision, and move forward at a later date,” she said.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Washington D.C. Hotel And Restaurant Suffer Significant Water Damage When Pipes Burst; Repairs Could Take Six Months

“…due to extensive water damage, the Latham Hotel & Citronelle closed down on July 12, 2012.  The building will be evaluated for the full extent of the repairs, but we are expecting that it may take up to 6 months to complete the necessary improvements…”

Water damage will temporarily close Georgetown destination Citronelle, and the hotel that houses it as well, according to a spokeswoman for the restaurant.

Both venues suffered water damage, though how significant is unclear at this point. Recent storms have plagued the general Washington area, including last week’s derecho that caused major power outages regionwide.

Citronelle spokeswoman Mel Davise confirmed the closure via email and said it could last up to a few months. She said she could offer no further details at this time about the closure or damages.
