Hospitality Industry Crime Risks: Thieves Steal Missouri Restaurant's Air Conditioning Unit For Third Time In Five Years; Total Losses Over $15,000

“…how thieves could come and go at ease over a span of about 90 minutes, climb the 8-foot-high jail bars protecting their air conditioning unit…essentially locking themselves inside the bars with no fear of getting caught as they dismantled the unit, stripping it of copper and other valuable metals. It was all caught by the surveillance camera…”

Air conditioner thieves struck a favorite Chinese restaurant in East St. Louis last month, for the third time in five years. The losses have topped $15,000 for the Hong Kong Chop Suey at 60thand State.

With almost no progress in the police investigation, the restaurant owners released the surveillance video to FOX 2, hoping to save their business. Instead of talking about food and customers’ orders, workers were talking about thieves again at the restaurant Monday night.

Thieves also hit the restaurant’s a/c units there in 2007 and 2010. Repair and replacement costs have soared. “First timeabout $8,000. Second time about $5,000. This time about $2,000,” Chiu explained.

Hospitality Industry Wireless Security Risks: Cyber Criminals Setting Up "Mock Wi-Fi Hot Spots" At Hotels To Steal Wireless Device Data

“People will see ‘free Wi-Fi’ and click on it, and when they do that they open themselves up to great exposure…the best approach is to be wary and steer clear of Wi-Fi hotspots that do not seem legitimate — something (that) looks like it’s not quite right, not the proper name they might expect,” 

Gary Davis, McAfee’s director of global consumer marketing, said there was a growing trend of hackers setting up mock Wi-Fi hotspots in public places, which appear at the top of the list of available Wi-Fi connections.

Once compromised, hackers can take total control of a device, including removing all the data contained on it. Android devices are currently the devices most targeted by hackers, Davis said.

“We saw a 1,200% increase in malware targeting Android devices just in the first quarter of this year,” he said.

John said the best approach for business travelers when using public Wi-Fi is to remotely log into their employer’s virtual private network, or VPN, which ensures all data received and sent from a device is encrypted.

Hospitality Industry Theft Risks: Guest At California Hotel Has $200,000 In Jewelry Stolen

The family believes someone took a large CD zipper case  containing $200,000 worth of gold, platinum, diamonds and once they realized  what was it in, they kept it for good.

A family visiting San Diego for a wedding lost $200,000 in  jewelry in a hotel theft.

Hangameh Mousavi says her family was visiting San Diego for  an Iranian wedding over the Memorial Day weekend and stayed at the Sheraton  Hotel on Harbor Island. It’s traditional to give jewelry to the bride and so family  members brought a lot of jewelry not only to wear, but also to give as  gifts.

“We have religious jewelry, stuff with Arabic writing,  prayers,” she explained. “Things from the revolution that they don’t make any more.  Things that have been passed down from grandparents.”

There was a conference at the hotel that weekend.

Hospitality Industry Payment Fraud Risks: Florida Hotels Victims Of $15,000 Scam By Guests; Legitimate Credit Cards "Switched" To Prepaid Debit Cards

“…(three men) racked up roughly $15,000 in charges at several Disney hotels earlier this year and then left without paying before hotel staff ever realized what happened…Each man checked into a hotel with a legitimate credit card but then switched the room charges to prepaid debit cards that each had less than $10 in value…”

Falk, 36, told deputies they pulled off the scam by taking advantage of a loophole in the way Disney charges resort guests that he discovered during a legitimate vacation four years ago. Then they charged thousands in theme-park purchases to their rooms. Since the hotel limited charges to between $1,000 and $1,500 per room, the fraudulent purchases went undetected since they stayed below those amounts, they told deputies.

Nero, 39, told deputies they visited resort hotels seven times and reserved a total of 13 rooms from February to April. The three could still be living the high life had it not been for a vigilant cigar shop employee, a report says. The employee contacted authorities after Falk allegedly came into the shop several times to buy hundreds of dollars worth of pricey cigarettes.

The employee told police that Falk was spending more money than most of the other customers but what really made him suspicious was that Falk never seemed to care what brand of cigarettes he bought. According to the shop owner, most smokers are loyal to their brands.

Hospitality Industry Information Risks: Man Arrested In Texas Hotel Room At Center Of "Extensive Identity Theft Operation"

“…(He) is charged with the possession of marijuana and meth. But inside his hotel room at the Hyatt Regency in Dallas police found 400 to 500 credit cards, debit cards, gift cards and social security numbers. There was evidence of personal information involving a federal agency lifted from registration forms from a conference hosted by a North Texas hotel…”

A California man with North Texas ties is behind bars for drug possession. He was also in a downtown Dallas hotel room that appeared to be the center of an extensive identity theft operation. On Monday Dallas police arrested 26-year-old Justin Bennett. His last known address is in Los Angeles but records show he used to live in Rockwall.

Police also confiscated three laptops, a printer and a credit card embossing machine.

Sources said whoever is behind the identity theft operation appears to be taking existing credit card numbers and putting different names on them. It would never have been discovered except for a clever car rental company.

On Sunday the rental company out of Oklahoma rented a white SUV from its satellite office near the airport to a man who paid $2200 for two weeks. He used a credit card.

Hospitality Industry Security Risks: Texas Hotel Guests Have Laptop And iPad Stolen From Room; GPS Tracking Feature Leads Police To Thieves

“…Police say hotel guests returned to their room to find their key card no longer worked. Once they had a new key, they discovered someone had stolen a laptop computer, wallet, a cell phone and the iPad from the room…”

Officers were able to track down an iPad stolen from a room at the Omni Bayfront Hotel to a home on the southside of town early Sunday morning.

The owner of the iPad used a tracking feature on the device to let officers know they could find the iPad at an address on High Meadow Drive. Police say when they arrived at the home they could see people inside and marijuana in plain view.

The people inside refused to answer the door for police at first, but someone inside did answer the victim’s phone when police called.

Hospitality Industry Security Risks: Colorado Hotel Clerk "Doused With Lighter Fluid" By Robbery Suspect

A robber doused a hotel clerk with lighter fluid at around 1:30 a.m. Saturday and threatened to set the clerk on fire at the Clarion Hotel.

The hotel is in the 300 block of West Bijou Street. Police said the suspect entered the lobby and demanded cash.

He doused a hotel clerk with lighter fluid and threatened to set the clerk on fire. The robber grabbed money out of the cash drawer and fled on foot..

Police said they arrived shortly after and searched the area with K-9 units, but were not able to track him down.

Hospitality Industry Theft Risks: North Carolina Hotel Employee Arrested For "Embezzling" More Than $16,000 From Hotel Deposits And Petty Cash

More than $12,000 came from cash deposits not being made; $2,132 from petty cash and falsified receipts; $1,756 from miscellaneous revenue; and $336 in overdraft fees as a result of deposits not being made.

A 57-year-old woman embezzled more than $16,000 from a Gastonia hotel in about three weeks, according to an arrest warrant. Judy Adaline Steele of Cullowhee in western North Carolina took the money from the Knights Inn at 1400 E. Franklin Blvd. between Dec. 23 and Jan. 11, according to the warrant.

She also occupied two rooms at the hotel, resulting in an additional $3,000 damage, according to the report.

Sri Krupa told police he had withheld Steele’s final two paychecks totaling $1,377 because of the theft. Steele was booked into Gaston County Jail under a $25,000 bond on a charge of embezzlement.

Hospitality Industry Security Risks: Tennessee Motel Surveillance Video Identifies Suspects In Front Desk Register Theft

“…The clerk noticed the money missing, called police and a quick check of the surveillance video showed the two suspects running back to their room in the very same hotel…”

Cookeville Police said two men were arrested after burglarizing the motel where they were staying. Surveillance video led police to the men who robbed the motel on Interstate Drive on Wednesday night.

The desk clerk left the front office to begin preparing breakfast for guests. That’s when one suspect kept an eye on him, while the other cleaned out the register of more than $200.

Both men, whose identities were not released, were booked Thursday morning on theft charges.

Hospitality Industry Theft Risks: Man Arrested For Using Fraudulent Credit Card Information At California Hotels; Police Seize $32,000 Worth Of Cashier's Checks

“…(the man) was arrested on suspicion of using fraudulent credit card information at hotels and resorts in Laguna Beach, Costa Mesa and Dana Point…between Feb. 15 and April 12…”

“…it was common for Larson to give his hotel room to someone else before the end of his stay and move on to another hotel…”

Harold Eric Larson, 36, of Orange was arrested April 12 at the Costa Mesa Marriott, where detectives seized documents, hotel booking information and $32,000 worth of cashier’s checks from 39 different accounts.

Larson is facing charges of burglary, identity theft, grand theft and credit card fraud, said Laguna Beach police Sgt. Robert Rahaeuser.

According to court records, Larson pleaded not guilty Monday to 20 felony counts.

Laguna police first got a tip March 2 that Larson was committing fraud at a Laguna resort.
