Hospitality Industry Crime Risks: California Hotels Victimized By Armed Robbery Suspects Who Would "Climb Over Front Counter And Steal Cash Drawer"

“…Surveillance video caught a recent hotel robbery…a suspect, with a handgun, climbs over the counter and steals the cash drawer.  In other cases, the crime turns violent…one hotel worker was punched in the face…”

Five suspects are in custody inNorthern California for crimes that may be tied to a string of robberies in theCentral Valley.  Two suspects are adults, three are juveniles.  Jamaul and Justina Baker, one 15-year-old and two 14-year-olds were arrested Wednesday night after allegedly robbing a hotel and convenience store inPlacerCounty.

Most of the victims up and down the state had similar stories.  A trio of masked robbers march into hotels and demand money.  Sometimes they become violent.  Eight hotels in the Central Valley and over a dozen in the state were hit.  Now the crime spree appears to be over.

In less than a week, robbers hit eight hotels and motels in the Central Valley:  Two in Fresno off the 99, then down the freeway to Selma and Kingsburg.  Over to the I-5, places in Coalinga, Firebaugh, Santa Nella and Patterson are robbed.

Hospitality Industry Security Risks: Florida Hotel Security Cameras Capture Armed Robbery Suspects In Action (Video)

Two armed men are on the run after police say they pulled of a hotel heist.

Security cameras captured every moment of the robbery at the Howard Johnson hotel on 50th Street in Tampa.

The footage shows the men make their way from the back of the hotel to the front office, where they force the clerk to empty the cash register at gunpoint. The suspects even take the handsets off the phones to keep the clerk from calling for help.

“These individuals are armed and they’re very determined and were very aggressive,” said Tampa police spokesperson Laura McElroy.

Both men were smart enough to cover their faces while they pulled off the crime, but one of them waited to mask up until after he scoped out the hotel lobby. That footage is giving police at least one clear shot of one of the men.

  1. Is there a high degree of visibility?
  2. Are shop or outlet displays free from posters and signs?
  3. Are  counters and cases low enough for line of sight?
  4. Are all sections of business are visible from central cashier area?
  5. Do you call authorities if you suspect someone?
  6. Have you secured your desk or cashier operation if there is a reason for concern?
  7. Have you installed a holdup alarm system and instructed staff in its use?
  8. Do you keep minimal cash?
  9. Is your routine for bank deposits varied?
  10. Is your safe locked at all times?
  11. Have you taught robbery prevention to employees?
  12. Are references checked before hiring new employees?
  13. Do two or more people open and close your business?
