Hospitality Industry Property Risks: North Carolina Hotel Suffers “Extensive Water Damage” From Fire Sprinklers Activated By Small Heating Unit Fire

“…Most of the damage was from the sprinkler system…once a fire activates the system, the sprinklers will continue to pour water (up to 40 Hotel Water Damagegallons per minute) until someone shuts them off…workers from a disaster recovery service, hauled fans and dehumidifiers to the damaged rooms. Workers had torn up soaked carpets from several of the rooms and at least half of one of the hallways…”

A small fire in a failed heating unit in an unoccupied room at the Holiday Inn on Glenwood Avenue on Thursday night caused extensive damage, but not because of the flames. Fire sprinklers doused the entire 10th floor of the building, soaking carpets, furniture and wallpaper. Damage extended to an estimated 25 percent of the building, according to a Raleigh Fire Department report.

About 70 firefighters arrived at the hotel just before 9 p.m. Thursday, but the sprinklers had already quenched the flames. No one was injured.

“They are designed to put a fire out, and the only way they can do that is to flow a lot of water,” Hicks said.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Maryland Restaurant Damaged And Two Employees Injured After Drunk Driver Crashes Vehicle Through Building’s Front Glass Exterior

“…two people were taken to the hospital initially, after a patron and an employee suffered non-life threatening injuries. A second worker was Restaurant Damage From Car Crashtransported to the hospital for anxiety…the driver was taken into custody and charged on suspicion of DUI…(a district manager) doesn’t know when the restaurant will reopen…”

A Lanham, Maryland Wendy’s restaurant is picking up the pieces after a driver of an SUV crashed through the shop and nearly reached the counter just before 9 p.m. on Friday in the 9400 block of Annapolis Road.

There was a steady flow of people on Saturday trying to place orders through the drive through and people were trying to get into the restaurant, but it’s closed. Customer after customer came to the seemingly popular spot surprised at what happened.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Missouri Restaurant Fire Starts In “Wood Pile Near Outdoor Smoker”; Spreads To Roof And “Guts Interior”

“…it appears that (the fire) started in a wood pile near a smoker that was attached to the main building…the Restaurant Firerestaurant’s walls were left standing, but the interior was gutted…”

An early-morning fire today that burned down Bandana’s, a popular barbecue restaurant in Crystal City, apparently started in a pile of wood near an outdoor smoker, the fire chief says. Crystal City Fire Chief Tony Bova said the state fire marshal’s office is investigating this morning’s two-alarm blaze, but he said early indications are that the fire was accidental.

No one was injured in the fire, which was reported at about 3 a.m. today at the restaurant on South Truman Boulevard. A passerby saw what appeared to be a trash bin on fire. It turned out to be the outdoor smoker. When the first crews arrived, they saw flames already shooting through the roof.

About 75 firefighters from seven fire departments fought the fire. It took them about an hour to bring the fire under control.

The pile of wood where the fire originated could have been smoldering for hours after the restaurant closed Tuesday night, the chief said.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: West Virginia Motel Fire Caused By Manager Frying Food In Room; Structural And Electrical Repairs Delay Reopening

“…(the street) was closed for about four hours because of the fire, and electricity had to be cut to the motel because of damage to the wiring…the Red Cross was called to find places for the few motel guests to spend the night…”

No one was injured in a fire that broke out early Friday at the Jefferson Motel. Kanawha County Fire Coordinator C.W. Sigman said a manager at the MacCorkle Avenue motel was frying some food at about 12:45 a.m. when the grease caught on fire and set fire to the room. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the manager’s area, he said.

Sigman said the motel will not be allowed to reopen until repairs are made and the electrical system is fixed and inspected.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Ohio Hotel Fire Started In "Mulch Pit" On Side Of Building; $2 Million In Structural Damage, $200,000 Contents

 “…a mulch bed on the side of the building caught fire, sending flames through a stairwell and into the attic…eight rooms on the third floor of the Microtel were directly affected and it took about three hours to control…”

Fire officials have determined the origin of a Jackson Township hotel fire on May 25 that shut down parts of Interstate 77. The State of Ohio Fire Marshal said a mulch bed on the side of the building caught fire, sending flames through a stairwell and into the attic. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation and officials have not located the ignition source, the fire department said.

Last month, NewsChannel5 consumer advocate Jenn Strathman reported that weather was to blame for an increase in mulch fires in northeast Ohio. In Lorain County, Avon Fire Chief Frank Root III said they have seen 12 mulch fires in 2012, compared to just one by this time last year.

Fire officials said eight rooms on the third floor of the Microtel were directly affected and it took about three hours to control the blaze. Fire departments from across the area responded to the scene and one firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation.

The incident caused about $2 million in damage to the building and another $200,000 on contents.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Wisconsin Restaurant Kitchen Fire Spreads To Second Floor Storage Area; Significant Water And Smoke Damage

“…some employees at closing time discovered a fire in the kitchen and attempted to put it out with extinguishers…the fire extended into the second floor that was mostly used for storage and contained a lot of combustibles…there was water damage to the basement and smoke and fire damage throughout the two-story structure….”

Firefighters arrived at Carvetti’s, 642 W. Main St. at 1 a.m., “they encountered heavy smoke and a heavy fire load on the second floor. The fire was pretty heavily involved,” said Capt. Mark Moller-Gunderson. The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation.

Lake Geneva Police Department Detective Ed Gritzner said the task force continues to investigate the fire, but “we don’t think any criminal activity is involved. We just need to talk to a few more employees to see what they have to say since the kitchen appears to be where the fire originated,” he said.

In fighting the blaze, fire crews made an aggressive interior attack while the ladder company opened the roof. Other firefighters chased down fire pockets before fire crews conducted overhaul and salvage work.

“They had the bulk of the fire knocked down in 15 to 20 minutes and prevented more serious damage from the fire that had a pretty good start,” Moller-Gunderson said.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Oklahoma Hotel Fire Caused By "Hail Stone Striking Electric Sign"; Damage Estimated At $1.17 Million

“…a hail stone struck an electric sign on the front of the (hotel). The innkeeper put it out, and then extinguished a flare up in the attic, Lewis said. Believing it was over, the innkeeper did not call 911…a passer-by spotted  flames in the hotel’s roof and called 911, Lewis said. When Edmond fire crews arrived, they found a fully involved fire in the attic…”

A hail stone falling from storms that passed over the city Tuesday evening ignited a fire that burned much of an Edmond hotel, a fire official said.

By about 2:20 a.m. all guests in the front of the hotel had been evacuated, Lewis said. While a total number of guests at the time was not available, an Edmond Fire Department investigator estimated the hotel was about 80 percent full, Lewis said.  There were no injuries to firefighters or hotel guests, Lewis said.

The hotel and real estate are valued at $1.17 million by the county assessor, Lewis said. The structure, built in 1983, appeared to be a total loss, he said.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Minnesota Restaurant Fire And Water Damage Results In $1 Million Reconstruction; "Discarded Cigarette" On Wood Deck Determined As Cause

“…a cigarette discarded in a flower pot on the deck sparked the fire that, coupled with the water used to extinguish it, caused more than $1 million in damage and closed the restaurant for more than six months…”

Even though the fire was mostly confined to the deck and part of the bar, the damage turned out to be much more severe than originally thought. It was February before the contractor could start reconstruction by gutting the remaining structure.

But Casper’s Cherokee of Eagan, the familiar barn-shaped restaurant and bar on Nicols Road, is on its way back. The restaurant opens Monday, completely refurnished and with some tweaks to the menu. Among them: A Blazin’ Barn Burger — proof that owner Rick Casper has a sense of humor — and Eagan’s Firehouse No. 5 Burger — named in honor of the department that responded to the blaze Oct. 9.

As the staff prepared for reopening last week, there were still lots of details to pin down. Chairs had not yet been delivered. A cement patio soon will be added where the deck once stood.

There was a flurry of staff training, initiating 50 new crew members and refreshing the roughly 20 people who waited for Casper’s to reopen, even though there wasn’t money to pay them past December.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Texas Motel Damaged By "Wind-Fueled Fire" That Momentarily Traps Firefighters; Firewall Proves Useless In Windy Conditions

“With the winds, even if you have firewalls, if somebody puts a cable hole — every little breach of a firewall for cable, electric, whatever is going to be a void. That firewall’s not intact anymore.”

San Antonio firefighters had a close call Friday afternoon when the rear of a burning motel collapsed on them. Crews responded to the fire reported at the Studio 6 motel at Highway 281 and Rhapsody to find flames shooting through the structure, according to WOAI-TV.

The wind-fueled fire originated on the first floor of the hotel, extended to the attic and then spread to a neighboring building. Fire Chief Charles Hood said that his firefighters had to rely on their training when the blaze quickly became out of control and a Mayday was called.

“That’s one of those moments when your heart just goes to your feet because we have reports of firefighters trapped,” he told the news station. Luckily, all of the firefighters made it out safely and no injuries were sustained.

Hood said that winds played a big role in helping the fire grow, and that if the building did have firewall, they wouldn’t have stopped it. Around 100 firefighters were on the scene and after the collapse, crews switched to a defensive fire attack to put out the blaze.
