Hospitality Industry Theft Risks: Former Iowa Hotel Assistant Manager Convicted Of Stealing Money From Guest's Wallet

“…Officers reviewed surveillance footage, which showed a woman picking up towels in the pool area along with the man’s wallet. The pool attendant turned over the wallet to Cole, who then was the assistant manager…the footage showed Cole looking through the wallet, then going into a room that did not have surveillance cameras…”

A former local hotel employee a jury recently found guilty of taking money from a guest, albeit on a lesser misdemeanor offense, will not have a conviction on her record.

Judgment for Misty Marie Cole’s offense of third-degree theft was deferred, and she was placed on probation for one year Monday.
A judge ordered her to pay the $1,000 she took.

Cole, 32, of Danville, was tried earlier this year for second-degree theft, which is a felony that could have netted the woman as many as five years in prison.

Hospitality Industry Guest Risks: Police Arrest Massachussetts Hotel Guest For "Disturbing The Peace" After Refusing To Cease Loud Noises In Room

“…hotel security personnel stated that they had received multiple complaints relative to loud and unsettling noises coming from one of the rooms in the hotel…”

“…When told the hotel had a right to disinvite guests for bad behavior and excessive noise, the individual continued to verbally disrespect and disparage the officers. Officers arrested (man) and charged him with Disturbing the Peace…”

Officers responded to a call for a person or persons producing excessive amounts of noise at 1 Avenue de Lafayette (Hyatt Hotel). Security personnel further stated that occupants of the room were asked to put an end to the loud noises or face the prospect of being asked to leave the hotel.

Despite repeated warnings, the occupants continued to generate disturbing noises. When told they, the occupants, had to leave, the occupants told hotel security they weren’t going anywhere. Officers proceeded to the room to break the bad news to the occupants.

Upon entering the room, officers observed several empty beer and wine bottles strewn about the room. While officers were in the middle of providing an explanation as to the occupants had to leave, one individual in particular began yelling and complaining about his rights.

Hospitality Industry Technology Risks: Hotel Internet Connections Pose New Risks For "Malicious Software" Infecting Guest's Computers

The FBI said typically travelers attempting to set up a hotel room Internet connection were presented with a pop-up window notifying the user to update a widely used software product. If the user clicked to accept and install the update, malicious software was installed on the laptop. The pop-up window appeared to be offering a routine update to a legitimate software product for which updates are frequently available.

The FBI today warned travelers there has been an uptick in malicious software infecting laptops and other devices linked to hotel Internet connections.

The FBI wasn’t specific about any particular hotel chain, nor the software involved but stated: “Recent analysis from the FBI and other government agencies demonstrates that malicious actors are targeting travelers abroad through pop-up windows while they are establishing an Internet connection in their hotel rooms.

The FBI also recommends that travelers perform software updates on laptops immediately before traveling, and that they download software updates directly from the software vendor’s website if updates are necessary while abroad.”

Hospitality Industry Security Risks: Florida Hotel's Video Surveillance System Captures Woman Stealing $700 In Property From Room

“…Surveillance video captured the 5-foot-7 thief, in a blue tank top and jeans  shorts, lugging the stolen TV down a hallway at the Sabal Suites hotel…”

A Florida bandit helped herself to a television, bedspread, curtains, rugs,  trash can, iron and ironing board from a vacant Tampa hotel room. The 10:15 a.m. robbery back on March 21 included several trips back and  forth as the woman stripped the room of about $700 worth of property — leaving  behind only the bed.

The 20-something suspect checked several doors before starting her one-woman  crime spree. The rooms were under renovation at the time of the robbery.

Hospitality Industry Theft Risks: California Hotel Security Guard Charged With "Grand Theft And Burglary"; Accessed Online System To Steal Guest's Valuables

A Los Angeles Police Department officer moonlighting as a security guard at Laguna Beach’s Surf & Sand Resort is to be charged with grand theft and burglary, the district attorney’s office said on Tuesday. Laguna Beach police, who had set up surveillance cameras within the hotel after its staff reported irregularities that began in October, arrested Quinton on Jan. 24, Lt. Jason Kravetz said.

When police arrested Quinton on Jan. 24, he had disappeared for over an hour during his shift, including from surveillance cameras police were monitoring in a spare hotel room, stealing $290 in bedding from a locked hotel storage room, and storing the items in his car. Detectives who went to Quinton’s home after the arrest seized more property, Kravetz said.

Hotel staff aided the investigation with monitoring cameras while detectives observed the employee from a hotel room. “We wanted to make sure we had a really solid case,” said Kravetz, who pointed out that most Orange County law enforcement agencies prohibit sworn officers from moonlighting in security posts or jobs involving alcohol. In Los Angeles County, officers have a long history of moonlighting as security for celebrities, he pointed out.

In October, Quinton allegedly stole cash that had been recovered from a room and secured in the hotel’s lost and found by accessing the online system and changing the cash entry into a “gold watch.” He is suspected of changing the room number where the $2,000 in cash had been found and falsely logging that the watch was returned to its owner, stealing $960 from the safe, Kim’s statement said.

Hospitality Industry Security Risks: New York Hotel Suffers Thousands Of Dollars In Damage From Group At Guest Room Party; Surveillance Video Critical To Finding Vandals

 “…a group at a party in a room at the Towne Plaza Suites on Holland Avenue is suspected of ripping off wall lights, breaking ceiling tiles and ceiling lights, discharging fire extinguishers and spraying a can of Mace in the third floor hallway…”

Vandals caused several thousand dollars worth of damage to an Albany hotel early Sunday morning. Mace got into the hotel’s ventilation system so the second and third floors had to be evacuated and ventilated, police said in a news release.

Hotel staff members believe the vandals are associated with an Albany man who rented a third fl oor room at the hotel. Police received a call from hotel staff about the incident at 1:15 a.m. Sunday, but when they arrived at the hotel all of the partygoers had already left through the back door.

Surveillance video will be examined to see if any of the vandals can be identified.

Hospitality Industry Guest Privacy Risks: Minnesota Hotel Employee, A Registered Sex Offender, Installed A Recording Device In Guest Room

 Marg is a registered sex offender and was convicted in 2002 of showing sexually-natured material to juvenile females in Wisconsin. Police are now searching Marg’s computer to see if it contains recordings of other hotel guests.

Honeymooners celebrating their wedding are recorded having sex at a St. Paul hotel. The couple had been hearing noises while staying at The 340 Hotel recently. Initially, the honeymooners thought they heard a noise near the hot tub. Later they learned the scary truth.

After noticing a large gap between their door and the floor the couple noticed a recording device. Police say the device contained a recording of the couple having sex.

Police say the device belongs to a 28 year old hotel desk clerk, Jeremiah Marg.

Hospitality Industry Theft Risks: California Hotel Robbery Suspect Entered Guest Rooms Through "Open Doors" And "While Faking A Disability To Avoid Suspicion"

“… in rooms where guests left without closing their doors tightly, jewelry, watches, electronics and wallets were missing. “He had credit cards from some of the victims, we believe he was involved in fraud and identity theft.”

“…Hotel workers told us they believe Hudson used a handicapped placard on his car, and walked with a limp. They speculate that is because of his apparent disability. Some hotel patrons may have opened side doors and let him in…”

Fresno police have arrested a suspect in a series of burglaries in hotels and motels in the Central Valley. Police have linked James McGovern to burglaries at three hotels in Fresno. He’s also a suspect in burglaries in Kingsburg, Clovis, Madera and Chowchilla.

Police think McGovern slipped in through side doors as guests left, and then walked the halls, looking for targets. Fresno Police Sergeant Mark Hudson told Action News the Airport Holiday Inn, The Marriot Courtyard and Homewood Suites in Fresno were among those McGovern hit. “He was going into these hotels and just checking for open doors, maybe where maids had been in going in stealing the TV’s.”

Hospitality Industry Guest Security Risks: Denver Hotel's "Room Key System" Malfunctions Locking Guests Out Of Rooms For Three Hours

“Shortly after midnight on New Year’s Eve, the hotel experienced a malfunction of the electronic room lock system. Once we became aware of the situation, we contacted the manufacturer of the system who provided technical support…”

Due to the inconvenience, the hotel gave guests refunds for the room.

Guests at the 628-room Denver Tech Center Marriott were locked out of their rooms when the clock struck midnight New Years. A room key malfunction kept guests out of their rooms from midnight until about 3 a.m.

Crowds of people packed into the lobby hoping to get key cards that worked. Others went to sleep in hallways. Hotel guests say it got pretty wild. “It was like a madhouse in there. It was crazy. I thought riots were going to start,” said Kyle Novak.

Denver Police say an officer called for assistance around 12:40 after a large disturbance in the parking lot. There were numerous reports of assaults and property damage.

In response to the incident Jennifer Atkins, the hotel’s general manager released the following statement.

 “We are sorry for the inconvenience this caused and are providing the night’s lodging free of charge to all registered guests. We will continue to work closely with the manufacturer of the lock system to better understand what may have caused the malfunction and will do what we can to prevent a similar malfunction from happening in the future.”
