Hospitality Industry Crime Risks: Florida Restaurant Thieves Steal Safe Containing $35,000 In Cash; Break In Through Wall In Business Next Door

“The burglars got into the restaurant by breaking into a neighboring business and entering through a wall. Once inside the restaurant, they took the safe and the surveillance system…”

Thieves broke into a restaurant on Flagler Street overnight, stealing a safe that contained $35,000 in cash.
According to NBC 6, thieves broke into El Caribe Cafe at 7173 W Flagler Street sometime between midnight and 4 a.m. Monday morning.

About four months ago, thieves broke into the same restaurant, entering through the roof.

Police are investigating the crime, and doubt one thief acted alone. Miami police spokesperson Kenia Reyes confirmed evidence was left at the scene, but is not disclosing what it is at this time.

Hospitality Industry Crime Risks: Tennessee Hotel Rooms Broken Into By "Convicted Burglar" Using "Chiseled Tip Knife" And Keycards Stolen From Cleaning Carts

“…Police said Brown was carrying seven keycards from several hotels as well as knife with a chiseled tip that could be used to defeat locking mechanisms…He told police he had taken the keys from a cleaning cart…”

Police are investigating whether a man who allegedly broke into a hotel room in downtown Nashville had any involvement in ten other similar hotel burglary since January.

Police said the victims were inside their hotel room on the 13th floor of the Renaissance Hotel when 35-year-old Antoun Brown came in and asked where the ice machine was, and then made his way into the bathroom before leaving.

The victims told police they heard someone messing with their door lock before he came inside.

Hotel security apprehended him on the 4th floor and held him until police arrived to take him into custody.

Brown, who is a convicted burglar, was charged with aggravated burglary and possession of a burglary tool.  His bond was set at $13,000.

Hospitality Industry Security Risks: Hotel "Electronic Room Locks" Opened With "Hacking Device" Tool Disguised As "Dry Erase Marker" (Video)

A trio of hackers have built a tool that appears to be an innocent dry erase marker, but when inserted into the port on the bottom of a common form of hotel room keycard lock triggers the lock’s open mechanism in a fraction of a second.

The security researchers who spend their days breaking into clients’ systems to find and fix security vulnerabilities often call themselves “penetration testers,” or “pentesters.” But one group of hotel lock hackers just gave the term “pentest” a very different meaning.

The inconspicuous lock hacking device is an adaption of one demonstrated at the Black Hat security conference in July by Cody Brocious, a hacker and software developer for Mozilla, who discovered and exploited a vulnerability in Onity locks, a cheap and popular hotel room lock that the company says are used on at least four million hotel rooms worldwide. Through the port on the bottom of the lock intended for a device that hotels can use to set master keys, Brocious found he was able to read the lock’s memory, including a decryption key stored on the locks that gave him access to their opening mechanism.

Hospitality Industry Crime Risks: South Dakota Restaurants Report $6,000 In "Bathroom Piping" Thefts

“…two men, one with a black backpack, were caught on surveillance standing next to the restroom Monday at the Russell Street and Minnesota Avenue restaurant…when a worker checked the restroom soon after, the toilet piping was missing…”

A local fast-food chain is out $6,000 after five of its restaurants were hit by a recent string of thefts of toilet piping in Sioux Falls. Five of the 11 local Burger King restaurants have reported thefts from men’s restrooms since Thursday. The most recent was Monday. Mike Leslie, director of operations for the local Burger King cooperate office, said the suspects might be caught on surveillance.

Police spokesman Sam Clemens said Monday’s two reports push the amount of restroom thefts to 14 since Thursday. Monday’s other theft was from the Ramkota Hotel in northwestern Sioux Falls. A public restroom was hit in the hotel, Clemens said.

Leslie said he has shared surveillance with police.

Hospitality Industry Crime Risks: California Hotels Victimized By Armed Robbery Suspects Who Would "Climb Over Front Counter And Steal Cash Drawer"

“…Surveillance video caught a recent hotel robbery…a suspect, with a handgun, climbs over the counter and steals the cash drawer.  In other cases, the crime turns violent…one hotel worker was punched in the face…”

Five suspects are in custody inNorthern California for crimes that may be tied to a string of robberies in theCentral Valley.  Two suspects are adults, three are juveniles.  Jamaul and Justina Baker, one 15-year-old and two 14-year-olds were arrested Wednesday night after allegedly robbing a hotel and convenience store inPlacerCounty.

Most of the victims up and down the state had similar stories.  A trio of masked robbers march into hotels and demand money.  Sometimes they become violent.  Eight hotels in the Central Valley and over a dozen in the state were hit.  Now the crime spree appears to be over.

In less than a week, robbers hit eight hotels and motels in the Central Valley:  Two in Fresno off the 99, then down the freeway to Selma and Kingsburg.  Over to the I-5, places in Coalinga, Firebaugh, Santa Nella and Patterson are robbed.

Hospitality Industry Employee Risks: Restaurant Owners Use "Written Integrity Tests" To Limit High Costs Of "Employee Theft And Drug Use"

“…restaurant  owners  must address ethical issues when evaluating job applicants for  employment.  Historically, employers have relied upon reference checks,  criminal background checks and interviews to address these issues…now a growing number of restaurant owners use written integrity testing  to improve their  ability to screen  out high risk job  applicants…”

Employee theft and other forms of counterproductivity are highly significant  factors in determining the success of restaurants.  While employers tend to  have some awareness of the frequency with which employees engage in theft, drug  use and other counterproductive behaviors, the following research findings are  helpful in providing an objective  perspective of  how  frequently  these problematic behaviors occur:

  • The National Restaurant Association recently reported that the cost of  employee theft for its members is $8.5 billion annually or approximately 4  percent of food sales.
  • A study released in 2007 by the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health  Administration indicated that the highest rate of illicit drug use occurs among  restaurant workers. A whopping 17 percent admitted to illegal drug use in the  last month.

Extensive research documents that integrity tests are good predictors of  whether an individual will engage in various forms of workplace  counterproductivity (e.g., theft, illegal drug use).  Also, these  assessments do not adversely impact minority candidates, which is a major  downside to criminal background checks.  Further, integrity tests are  relatively inexpensive and can be easily administered online. As a result, high  risk applicants can be screened from contention before wasting time and money on  interviews, criminal background checks and reference checks.

Hospitality Industry Theft Risks: Wisconsin Restaurant Employee Arrested For "Cashing Two Unauthorized Businsess Checks" In His Name

“…the owner of Espana Restaurant and Bar discovered Johnson had cashed two unauthorized checks from the business in his name for $160 and $350…the checks were kept in a locked desk drawer in the basement of the business and were pre-signed to pay vendors…”

A 37-year-old Wauwatosa man is facing charges after he allegedly stole two checks from his employer and then cashed them in his name. Dana James Johnson was charged Thursday in Milwaukee County Circuit Court with one count of theft. If convicted, he faces up to nine months in prison and $10,000 in fines.

Officers then went to Community Financial, 4525 W. North Ave., where they found security video footage of Johnson coming into the bank and cashing the checks.

Hospitality Industry Crime Risks: Pennsylvania Hotels Victimized By "Con Artist" Who Checked In, Charged Meals To Room And Then Left Without Paying

“…the man who passed as a hapless hotel guest was actually a skilled  con artist who claimed he had been robbed of his wallet to persuade  receptionists to let him have a room…he promised to pay the next day, offering a phony bank  statement as proof that he was good for it…”

Larry Raymond grew accustomed to the high life during his short stays in the  city’s finest hotels, where he dined in restaurants, patronized gift shops and  enjoyed a cup of Starbucks coffee now and then. He ran up hundreds of dollars in tabs — police said he spent more than  $1,500 at the Uptown Marriott — and had it all billed to his room.

But Mr. Raymond never settled up. Mr. Raymond’s lavish run came to an end late Wednesday when police arrested  him in Room 216 of the Cambria Suites in Uptown less than an hour after he  checked in. He told a manager his wallet and credit card had been stolen.

Mr. Raymond, 55, who has no permanent address, spent Thursday in the  Allegheny County Jail. Court records show he was unable to post $50,000  bail.

“He’s a nationwide con artist,” said Detective Jack Mook of the city’s Zone 2  police station, who began investigating Mr. Raymond’s suspicious stay in  Pittsburgh last week when the security director of the Omni William Penn  Downtown told him about a guest who claimed his wallet was stolen and skipped  out on a $753 bill.

Hospitality Industry Security Risks: Louisiana Hotels' Guest Rooms Burglarized By Thieves Who "Checked For Unlocked Doors"; Suspects Walked Out With Laptops And Electronics

“…(suspects were) walking in the hotel, walking out with the victim’s property…laptops, electronics, iPods, and iPads…cell phones, bags of clothing, jewelry…in some cases thieves got into rooms by checking for unlocked doors…”

After arresting two suspects in a string of downtown hotel burglaries, New Orleans Police confiscated loads of property. Police say rooms at several hotels in the downtown area were burglarized in early July. It was later determined to be the work of the same set of crooks.

“I noticed my door in my room even if I just walk out it doesn’t close,” one hotel guest said. Carroll says an anonymous tip from the public led detectives to arrest this modern day Bonnie and Clyde.

A search warrant executed at her home turned up loads of evidence.
