According to the OSHA release, the serious violations at Kauai Beach Resort involved storage, handling and labeling of propane tanks, electrical wiring, electrical work practices by untrained maintenance personnel, and training and use of personal respiratory and 
electrical protective equipment.
A popular Kauai hotel received 14 workplace safety and health standards violations on Thursday, and nine of them were serious enough for the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration to take action. Kauai Beach Resort in Lihue faces a total of $48,000 in proposed fines. Kai Management Services of Lihue, the management company for Kauai Beach Resort, received the violations following a routine inspection conducted on Feb. 14 by the OSHA Honolulu Area Office.

The owner of a long-troubled Santa Cruz area inn is headed to trial on charges that he mishandled workers’ compensation and committed insurance fraud.
Sanjiv Kakkar, owner of Brookdale Inn and Spa, is accused of dissuading an employee from seeking workers’ compensation after a work injury, fraud and making false claims. He is charged with two counts of insurance fraud, failure to maintain workers’ compensation insurance and passing off bad checks, according to Kelly Walker, a prosecutor with the Santa Cruz District Attorney’s Office.
Kakkar appeared in court Friday with his attorney, Peter Leeming, to set a date of March 12 for a jury trial. A court date was also scheduled for December for a motion to consolidate the case with a second criminal case involving Kakkar. The latter case involves misdemeanor violations of health and safety codes.
Leeming said he is looking forward to finally taking the case to trial after multiple delays.

The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation, which oversees food sellers, inspected the hotel Wednesday and found violations such as open food stored in unclean places, employees handling food with bare hands, lack of handwashing and dirty conditions, the inspection report showed.
Inspectors found a dozen critical food-safety violations this week in the restaurant of the NFL’s headquarters hotel, where 25 league employees here for Super Bowl XLIV got sick from a stomach bug.
The oceanfront Westin Beach Resort in Fort Lauderdale also had failed a restaurant inspection in September, and let its license expire in December by not paying a $457 renewal fee, state officials said Friday.
Health officials were quick to say they did not yet know what caused the outbreak, how the guests got it or whether the hotel bore any blame. Samples were still being tested.
