Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Washington Restaurant Damaged By Early Morning Grease Fire Which Spread Into Vents

“…The restaurant wasn’t open yet…but they likely were getting food ready for their lunch buffet when the fire broke out…Crews had to cut holes in the roof and also attacked the fire from inside…”

A grease fire that spread into the vents of a Kennewick restaurant prompted a large call-out of fire crews Saturday morning.

The building already had been evacuated when the first crews got on scene, but firefighters did do a sweep inside to make sure everyone was out, said Kennewick Fire Capt. Linc Swenson.

Ten units from the Kennewick, Richland and Pasco fire departments and Benton Fire District 1 were dispatched to the restaurant.

Fire crews, however, were able to get the fire contained within 10 minutes, Swenson said. It took another 10 minutes before they were sure flames hadn’t spread into the attic. “It went out with a little bit of water and quite a bit of tenacity,” Swenson said.

The biggest challenge was getting onto the roof, because of the way it’s designed and the power lines on one side of the building, he said. Fire crews were on scene for about two hours. There were no injuries. Most of the damage inside the restaurant was in the kitchen, Swenson aid.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Washington Hotel Guests "Break Off Two Fire Sprinklers" Causing Over $100,000 In Water Damage To Three Floors

“…the newlyweds had some type of disagreement throughout the evening which led to Peters breaking off two fire sprinklers inside the room as well as damaging nearly all the furniture and appliances inside the room.  This caused nearly three floors of the hotel to flood and, according to the general manager, will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to fix…”

A couple celebrating their one year anniversary at a Spokane Valley hotel caused hundreds of thousands of damages during a fight.  On Wednesday, around 6:00 a.m., Spokane Valley Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a trouble unknown call at the Pheasant Hill Inn located at 12415 East Mission Avenue in Spokane Valley.

The hotel had just completed six months of renovation. Both Peters and Wozniak were booked into the Spokane County Jail on the felony charge of Malicious Mischief 1st Degree.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Wisconsin Restaurant Kitchen Fire Spreads To Second Floor Storage Area; Significant Water And Smoke Damage

“…some employees at closing time discovered a fire in the kitchen and attempted to put it out with extinguishers…the fire extended into the second floor that was mostly used for storage and contained a lot of combustibles…there was water damage to the basement and smoke and fire damage throughout the two-story structure….”

Firefighters arrived at Carvetti’s, 642 W. Main St. at 1 a.m., “they encountered heavy smoke and a heavy fire load on the second floor. The fire was pretty heavily involved,” said Capt. Mark Moller-Gunderson. The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation.

Lake Geneva Police Department Detective Ed Gritzner said the task force continues to investigate the fire, but “we don’t think any criminal activity is involved. We just need to talk to a few more employees to see what they have to say since the kitchen appears to be where the fire originated,” he said.

In fighting the blaze, fire crews made an aggressive interior attack while the ladder company opened the roof. Other firefighters chased down fire pockets before fire crews conducted overhaul and salvage work.

“They had the bulk of the fire knocked down in 15 to 20 minutes and prevented more serious damage from the fire that had a pretty good start,” Moller-Gunderson said.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Illinois Hotel Suffered Over $2 Million In Water Damage In 2010 After 13.5 Inches Of Rainfall Caused Flooding In Downtown Area

“…The Mechanical Rooms were flooded and heating and air-conditioning had to be taken out and replaced. The entire lower level of the building was destroyed, including irreplaceable antiques being stored down there. The structural damage was significant…”

The rain started on July 27, 2011, and by 1 a.m. on July 28, the flood gates were ordered closed. Everything the City of Galena had done to help prevent the flooding of downtown wasn’t enough as the rain came, the sewers backed up, and the water rose to 27 inches in some places. One of those places was the historic DeSoto House Hotel.

Owner Dan Kelley surveyed the damage while making sure current guests were alright. The air-conditioning was out, as well as the hot water. Some guests left, but most stayed, insisting on paying full rate for their stay. The hotel never closed its doors.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Minnesota Restaurant Fire And Water Damage Results In $1 Million Reconstruction; "Discarded Cigarette" On Wood Deck Determined As Cause

“…a cigarette discarded in a flower pot on the deck sparked the fire that, coupled with the water used to extinguish it, caused more than $1 million in damage and closed the restaurant for more than six months…”

Even though the fire was mostly confined to the deck and part of the bar, the damage turned out to be much more severe than originally thought. It was February before the contractor could start reconstruction by gutting the remaining structure.

But Casper’s Cherokee of Eagan, the familiar barn-shaped restaurant and bar on Nicols Road, is on its way back. The restaurant opens Monday, completely refurnished and with some tweaks to the menu. Among them: A Blazin’ Barn Burger — proof that owner Rick Casper has a sense of humor — and Eagan’s Firehouse No. 5 Burger — named in honor of the department that responded to the blaze Oct. 9.

As the staff prepared for reopening last week, there were still lots of details to pin down. Chairs had not yet been delivered. A cement patio soon will be added where the deck once stood.

There was a flurry of staff training, initiating 50 new crew members and refreshing the roughly 20 people who waited for Casper’s to reopen, even though there wasn’t money to pay them past December.

“…Fire officials said a female guest was contacted by someone at the  website pranku.net and told that a gas leak had occurred in the hotel.  The  guest was then tricked into breaking off the sprinkler head in her room with a  toilet bowl cover, which then caused water to flow into eight rooms and the  floor below…”

Firefighters were called to the second floor of the Holiday Inn Express  in the 1000 block of Beards Hill Road about 1:30 a.m. Friday.

Officials said there was about $50,000 worth of damage to the hotel. No  charges have been filed at this point.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: California Hotel Suffers Extensive Water Damage To 30 Rooms As "Cast Iron Pipe Connected To Fire Pump" Cracks; Seismic Shifting Possible Cause

“…(the hotel General Manager)…was in her office at 10:30 a.m. Thursday when she realized the carpet was “floating”…The source of the water was traced to a crack in a pipe that connects to a fire pump…a jackhammer was needed to reach the pipe, which is under cement…(the cause of the leak) is theorized (to be) seismic shifting, “not age, because it was cast iron…”

Santa Cruz Dream Inn, the city’s largest hotel, reopened about noon Friday after a 24-hour shutdown triggered by flooding on three floors that forced the hotel’s evacuation and relocation of 130 guests.

General manager Robin Donovan said Friday morning her staff has been working 24/7 to reopen the 163-room hotel. Because of the water damage, 30 rooms on the first three floors are “out of order,” she said.

Damages range from “light” to “extensive,” she added, estimating it would take 10 days up to three weeks to reopen those rooms. A dollar estimate was not available.

The hotel was empty Thursday night with guests relocated to other accommodations, including the Beach Street Inn & Suites, Chaminade, Holiday Inn Express and Scotts Valley Hilton.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: North Dakota Hotel Water Pipe Breaks Flooding Entire Hotel; All 40 Guest Rooms Evacuated

“The water pressure actually broke a wall down….They had to evacuate all 40-some rooms that night.”

Late in the night on Jan. 22, a water pipe on the north side of Candlewood Suites burst, causing the hotel to close until further notice.

According to WooMi Phillips, assistant professor and head of the hospitality and tourism management department at NDSU, the water damage began somewhere in the third floor ceiling.

Candlewood Suites, although located on the north side of NDSU’s main campus just west of the Fargodome, is not technically not part of the university. However, the hotel caters to various departments on campus, offers a discounted rate to families of students and even houses a lounge and classroom for the hospitality and tourism management students.

“Initially, we were concerned about the laptops and the computers and printer in the lounge,” Phillips said.

Nichole Ascheman, operations manager at Candlewood Suites and former NDSU student, contacted assistant professor Dipra Jha about the situation early Monday, Jan. 23. Jha taught three hospitality classes in Candlewood Suites.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Florida Hotel Suffers Major Water Damage As Fire Sprinklers Are Accidently Activated, Flooding First And Second Floors

“…A guest in a room knocked off a sprinkler, accidentally setting off the fire extinguishers. The knock-off of the sprinkler was itself accidental…The third floor was not affected. But water damaged the second floor, and seeped down to the first, damaging that floor as well. About three or four dozen guests were evacuated…”

Palm Coast’s Holiday Inn Express, a three-story, 81-room hotel, was evacuated this afternoon when sprinklers went off on the second floor. The Palm Coast Fire Department and the county’s fire rescue department responded in force, but there was no fire. A guest in a room knocked off a sprinkler, accidentally setting off the fire extinguishers. The knock-off of the sprinkler was itself accidental. No one was injured.

The third floor was not affected. But water damaged the second floor, and seeped down to the first, damaging that floor as well. About three or four dozen guests were evacuated. They were invited to register at the Hampton Inn and Suites, just 50 yards away. The Hampton Inn and the Holiday Inn Express are owned by the same concern. The Hampton Inn’s lobby at mid-afternoon was teeming with people registering at the front desk and waiting in the lobby-dining area, as firefighters remained at the Holiday Inn.

The Holiday Inn is expected to be off limits to guests for about 24 hours as a company is brought in to dry the two floors affected, authorities at the scene said. Although the third floor is not affected, the hotel’s elevator has been shut down because of water leakage. Hotel officials would not comment.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Texas Hotel's Insurance Company Sues "Irresponsible Hotel Guests" For Causing Fire Sprinklers To Flood 39 Rooms On Four Floors

“…the defendants damaged the hotel by hanging clothes on a fire sprinkler head mounted to the wall…the hanger broke the glass tube component in the sprinkler, which caused it to activate and release enough water to flood 39 rooms on four floors, a workout room and four corridors…”

An insurance company is suing over claims irresponsible hotel guests in River Oaks activated a sprinkler system, causing 39 rooms to flood. Lexington Insurance, on behalf of RLJ Development, filed a lawsuit on Monday, Jan. 23 in the Harris County District Court against Al J. Mizrahie, doing business as Belladonna U.S.A., and others, citing negligence.

Carpets, padding, drywall, baseboards, bedding, furniture and fixtures were damaged during the incident, the plaintiff claims.
