Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Idaho Hotel Suffers Water Damage To Lobby And Parking Garage When “Frozen” Fire Suppression Pipe Bursts

“…it took some time for Boise firefighters to stop the broken line, drain the water and help dry out the lobby of the hotel and Hotel Water Damagethe parking garage…(hotels must) take some precautionary measures to keep pipes from freezing and especially as they start to thaw (such as) wrapping the pipes with heating tape…”

Saturday night at the Hampton Inn in Boise’s downtown a thawing fire suppression pipe burst and sent water surging. A first person video shows the amount of water that came flowing inside the parking garage, which Captain Ramey said was due to a frozen fire suppression pipe that was expanding and thawing.

It was not the first time the fire crews responded to the report of burst pipes as the temperatures in the Treasure Valley started to warm after our recent cold snap. Last Tuesday, pipes burst at the Tavern at Bown Crossing causing damage inside the building and forcing the restaurant to close for a couple days. Also, United Power workers were out last week helping more than 70 customers thaw  their pipes.

General Manager of the Hampton, Erik Hansen, said the pipe burst in the garage area, which is not heated and the water poured below denting one car and covering another with water.

Hansen said they actually had a fire suppression pipe burst during last winter’s cold snap. It was in a completely different area of the building. He says they will now likely be wrapping the pipes with heating tape.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: New York Hotel And Restaurant Suffers “Significant Water Damage” After Frozen Pipe Bursts; $200,000 Damage From Third Floor To Basement

“…A water pipe had frozen and burst early Wednesday morning…the pipe was connected to the facility’s sprinkler system and the malfunction triggered a response from the Geneseo Fire Department…The pipe burst Hotel Water Damageon the third floor, pouring water into a guest room and working its way down to the basement. There was “significant damage” in several parts of the building including two parlors, dining rooms and guest rooms and spaces above and below the rooms…”

The Big Tree Inn, 46 Main St., remains closed after a water pipe burst on Wednesday, flooding several areas of the landmark building and causing significant damage from the third floor to the basement. Big Tree Inn will remain closed through Friday, but Scott is hopeful that at least part of the facility will be able to open some time during the weekend.

Scott estimated repairing the damage will cost $200,000 or more. The restaurant does have insurance.

Facility managers were alerted to a problem by a guest who reported hearing what was believed to be a small leak. An investigation revealed the bigger problem.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Washington D.C. Hotel And Restaurant Suffer Significant Water Damage When Pipes Burst; Repairs Could Take Six Months

“…due to extensive water damage, the Latham Hotel & Citronelle closed down on July 12, 2012.  The building will be evaluated for the full extent of the repairs, but we are expecting that it may take up to 6 months to complete the necessary improvements…”

Water damage will temporarily close Georgetown destination Citronelle, and the hotel that houses it as well, according to a spokeswoman for the restaurant.

Both venues suffered water damage, though how significant is unclear at this point. Recent storms have plagued the general Washington area, including last week’s derecho that caused major power outages regionwide.

Citronelle spokeswoman Mel Davise confirmed the closure via email and said it could last up to a few months. She said she could offer no further details at this time about the closure or damages.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: California Hotel Suffers Extensive Water Damage To 30 Rooms As "Cast Iron Pipe Connected To Fire Pump" Cracks; Seismic Shifting Possible Cause

“…(the hotel General Manager)…was in her office at 10:30 a.m. Thursday when she realized the carpet was “floating”…The source of the water was traced to a crack in a pipe that connects to a fire pump…a jackhammer was needed to reach the pipe, which is under cement…(the cause of the leak) is theorized (to be) seismic shifting, “not age, because it was cast iron…”

Santa Cruz Dream Inn, the city’s largest hotel, reopened about noon Friday after a 24-hour shutdown triggered by flooding on three floors that forced the hotel’s evacuation and relocation of 130 guests.

General manager Robin Donovan said Friday morning her staff has been working 24/7 to reopen the 163-room hotel. Because of the water damage, 30 rooms on the first three floors are “out of order,” she said.

Damages range from “light” to “extensive,” she added, estimating it would take 10 days up to three weeks to reopen those rooms. A dollar estimate was not available.

The hotel was empty Thursday night with guests relocated to other accommodations, including the Beach Street Inn & Suites, Chaminade, Holiday Inn Express and Scotts Valley Hilton.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: North Dakota Hotel Water Pipe Breaks Flooding Entire Hotel; All 40 Guest Rooms Evacuated

“The water pressure actually broke a wall down….They had to evacuate all 40-some rooms that night.”

Late in the night on Jan. 22, a water pipe on the north side of Candlewood Suites burst, causing the hotel to close until further notice.

According to WooMi Phillips, assistant professor and head of the hospitality and tourism management department at NDSU, the water damage began somewhere in the third floor ceiling.

Candlewood Suites, although located on the north side of NDSU’s main campus just west of the Fargodome, is not technically not part of the university. However, the hotel caters to various departments on campus, offers a discounted rate to families of students and even houses a lounge and classroom for the hospitality and tourism management students.

“Initially, we were concerned about the laptops and the computers and printer in the lounge,” Phillips said.

Nichole Ascheman, operations manager at Candlewood Suites and former NDSU student, contacted assistant professor Dipra Jha about the situation early Monday, Jan. 23. Jha taught three hospitality classes in Candlewood Suites.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Wisconsin Hotel "Stairwell Pipe Bursts" On Seventh Floor Damaging Eight Rooms

“… a pipe broke in a stairwell. Water poured out for at least ten minutes and ended up in the basement of the hotel.  Eight guest rooms had water logged carpets which will have to be torn out…”

The Pfister Hotel is dealing with a mess after a pipe burst and several rooms flooded Saturday. Clean up crews spent the day at the historic hotel in downtown Milwaukee Saturday.

Fans were brought in to help dry out other areas. The hotel itself is still open.  But the burst pipe foiled Tammy Spoek’s day at the hotel’s spa.  “I was down at the spa and i was hearing that there was water. Water’s coming from the ceilings. So she came to me and said Tammy, I’m really sorry but we’re going to have to cancel your appointment,” Tammy said.

Spoek says it appeared the pipe broke somewhere near the seventh floor.

Hotel management says they believe the burst pipe is due to the cold temperatures the last few days.

The Pfister’s computer system apparently went down.  But the hotel and its restaurants did remain open.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: North Carolina Hotel Ceiling Collapses After "Drainage Pipe Bursts" During Heavy Rain (Video)

“…A drainage pipe that helps drain water from the roof runs through the ceiling in the lobby…. The pipe burst causing a portion of the ceiling to collapse and flood the lobby with water…”

A portion of the ceiling in a Charlotte hotel collapsed Friday afternoon after heavy rains caused a pipe to burst. Erik Slemon and his father, Allan Goldberg, are from Miami and were staying at the hotel to attend a men’s clothing trade show.

“In a matter of seconds it got a little stronger,” Erik Slemon said.  “I pulled out my phone and I shot it and the whole ceiling just came down.  The whole lobby was flooded in a matter of five seconds.” No one was injured, and there is no official damage estimate from the flooding.

Hospitality Industry Insurance Risks: Florida Hotel Water Pipe Bursts Causing Lobby Ceiling To Collapse And Guest Evacuation

Guests at a Miami Beach hotel were evacuated after a water pipe in the building burst, causing the ceiling to collapse into the hotel lobby.

“…Gushing water spread into the hotel lobby and part of the ceiling collapsed, said Adonis Garcia, spokesman for Miami Beach Fire Rescue.…”

A water pipe located between the first and second floor of the Claremont Hotel on the 1700 block of Collins Avenue burst Sunday evening. Guests at the Claremont were evacuated and relocated to another hotel.

“The fire department said where the roof came down, it was actually leaking from inside and then it just blew out the ceiling,” said Ros Guttso, hotel general manager. No one was injured.
