Hospitality Industry Property Risks: "Tornado-Damaged" Missouri Hotel Reopens After Spending Millions Of Dollars Repairing Windows And Structure

The tornado caused millions of dollars in damage, but no one was seriously injured…even the landscaping was dug up because of fallen glass.

The Hilton Hotel at Branson Landing will officially reopen September 15, more than six months after it was damaged by the Leap Day tornado. Since the February 29 EF-2 twister, 3,400 energy-efficient replacement windows have been installed at the hotel.

Nearly every piece of furniture and nearly all the carpet in the 12-story hotel will be new. The outside of the hotel will have a new look, too.

The Hiltons of Branson say new thermostats in all the guest rooms have a motion-detector system, allowing the room temperature to return to a pre-set level when the room is not occupied.

The temporary closure cost some team members their jobs. There are plans to rehire staff once the hotel reopens this fall. The Branson Convention Center, which sustained less damage than the adjacent hotel, reopened in the late spring.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Kentucky Hotel's Roof Partially Torn Off By High Winds; Water Damage To Top Three Floors From Sprinkler System

“…the National Weather Service was calling for 60-mile-per-hour winds. The top three floors of the hotel had water damage from the sprinkler system and officials say those guests were relocated…”

A Louisville hotel suffered damage in Thursday’s storm. Heavy winds whipped through the airport at an estimated 44-mile-per-hour winds. At one point, part of the roof on the Crowne Plaza Hotel was blown off.

At least 200 rooms were impacted. Several cars in the parking lot were also damaged.

The Crown Plaza was hosting the National Junior Angus Show and was at 100 percent occupancy.

“We’ve also heard the sprinkler system went off in there and that other things could be ruined other than the top floors, so we were anxious to see, but we were very amazed to see all the debris. Amazed. And that’s typically where we park,” says Donna Guice, a hotel guest from Louisiana.

Hospitality Industry Business Risks: Hotel Owners Must Consider "Business Loss/Interruption Insurance" As Part Of Comprehensive "Disaster Insurance" Coverage

“…many hotels don’t have business interruption insurance because it comes with higher premiums and deductibles…(one hotel) close to the Kentucky Derby area was hit by a tornado…the hotel wasn’t damaged, but they lost all of their utilities. If they hadn’t had that business loss insurance, they would have lost all of that income they would have generated during the race.”

After two tornadoes hit the same Midwest region in the United States within a year and caused extensive hotel damage, disaster insurance deductibles are on the rise and hoteliers are mulling their coverage options.

  • Higher deductibles – While premiums appear to be remaining steady, insurance companies in the Midwest are charging a higher rate of percentage deductibles to help keep costs down, he said. As an example, if a hotel had $100 million in coverage and there was a 5% deductible, the deductible would be $5 million.
  • Wind and flood insurance premiums in the Midwest remain relatively flat overall, with slight increases for some hotels. In other parts of the country, such as coastal areas, the cost of wind and flood insurance has risen 8% to 10% on average, according to sources.
  • Reinsurance options—insurance that is purchased by one insurance company from another—are available, as are percentage deductibles based on the amount of coverage rather than a flat rate.
  • Wind deductible buy-back insurance—which provides a buy-back policy that reduces the higher percentage deductible—with deductibles most likely still will be higher than the flat deductibles previously offered.
  • Storm surge coverage is available under a flood plan or wind storm plan. Some policies exclude floods altogether.
  • Business loss/interruption insurance - Hotels impacted after the 9/11 terrorist attacks and hotels in California affected by the 1994 Northridge, California, earthquake would have benefited greatly from business loss/interruption insurance.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Florida Motel Damaged By "Minor Tornado" That Tears Roof Off

“…the storm was accompanied by 35 mph winds but it was a wind burst, or a minor tornado according to eyewitnesses, that pulled the roof off the motel and placed a good portion of it next door on top of… Condos (next door)…”

Sixteen residents of the Holiday Isle Resort at 14711 Gulf Blvd., were displaced early Sept. 7 after a wind storm took about one-third of the roof off the building.

No injuries were reported when the storm struck shortly after 1 a.m. but the American Red Cross was on the scene to help the motel’s residents find temporary housing.

Hotel Property Damage Risks: Texas Hotel Hit With "High Winds" And Section Of Roof "Falls Off"

“…Some of the worst (wind) damage hit the Comfort Suites, where a section of the roof just came off…”

“…the damage in the Waxahachie area was consistent with 80 mph straight-line winds…”

Signs all over town were destroyed, including some highway signs that were not only upside-down but also facing the wrong direction.

“Luckily, that’s the only damages there are to the hotel,” said Charity Betts, General Manager of Comfort Suites. Fortunately there were no injuries at the hotel.  The roof blew off around 3:00 Monday morning, and you couldn’t find one guest who slept through all this.

Robinson’s room was right under the damaged section. “It kinda felt like the room was trembling a little bit,” said Robinson.

Over at Lowe’s, merchandise was strewn across the parking lot.  To make matters worse, the cash registers weren’t working, so all transactions had to be done by hand.

“Everybody’s just like ‘oh my gosh, I can’t believe this happened,‘” said Betts.
